Subject: K12OSN K12LTSP 4.0 Released
Hello Folks,
Eric Harrison has been hard at work and tonight along with Jim McQuillan from http://ltsp.org he has released version 4.0 of K12LTSP with LTSP-4 packages.
Our log files show over 50,000 downloads from the MESD ftp server alone last year. This version is even better.
Do you have 100% uptime for EVERY desktop in your school since August? If not, perhaps you need to reconsider using Linux.
Our motto: It works. It's free. Duh...

I'm happy to officially announce K12LTSP 4.0.0.
ISO images are currently available at the following mirrors:
ftp://k12linux.mesd.k12.or.us/pub/K12LTSP/4.0.0/iso/ ftp://videl.ics.hawaii.edu/mirrors/k12ltsp/4.0.0/ rsync -Pv k12linux.mesd.k12.or.us::K12LTSP-mirror .
On the surface, this is a fairly minor update. For the most part,
it looks and feels similar to K12LTSP 3.1.0.
Under the covers, however, everything has changed.
LTSP
We've made the dramatic jump from LTSP 3.0 to 4.0. LTSP 4.0 is a complete overhaul of the LTSP under-pinnings. While the look and feel of LTSP 4.0 is not much different than 3.0, version 4.0 paves a strong foundation to build on. See the following link for all of the good news: http://www.ltsp.org/ltsp-4.html
New features include the LTSP Build Environment (LBE) which facilitates building extensions to LTSP, ltspcfg which makes it easier to configure/debug LTSP, ltspinfod which makes it possible to query the configuration of a terminal, and improvements in local apps.
The features in LTSP 4.0 open up new worlds of possibilities
that were difficult, if not impossible, in earlier versions
of LTSP. Expect great things in the future. Thanks to Jim
and crew at LTSP for all the long, grueling work required
to make LTSP 4.0 a reality. LTSP 4.0 is a work of art.
Red Hat
Previous versions of K12LTSP were based on Red Hat Linux. As I'm sure you are all aware, Red Hat Linux is no more. RHL has been split into two, the fast-moving Fedora and the stable Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Fedora is freely redistributable and community developed and supported. The best features developed and proven in Fedora will be merged into the slower-moving RHEL, which will be commercially supported by Red Hat.
This is great for K12LTSP, it gives us the opportunity to follow the same path. The latest-and-greatest K12LTSP will be based on the quickly evolving Fedora. As new features have proved their worth and stability, they will be made available for RHEL.
The Red Hat Network currently offers the stable versions of the K12LTSP packages for Red Hat Linux 7.3, 8.0, and 9. We hope to expand on this tradition by making it easy to install packages proven in K12LTSP 4.0 on the enterprise friendly RHEL 3.0.
This gives us the best of both worlds. It frees us up to push the state of the art as far as we can push it, while offering a rock-solid version for those who prefer slow-moving stability.
Thanks to Todd Warner at the Red Hat for helping us bottle up this magic in a sane and logical fashion.
-Eric
