Dear Mr./Ms. Principal,

I am a member of a local volunteer group called PLUG (Portland Linux Users Group).<edit...>

We are users and advocates of free software. We would like to give some free software to your school. There are no strings attached; it really is free. You can use this software in your classrooms and make copies to send home with your staff and students.

The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a powerful graphics package similar to PhotoShop. You can use it to edit scanned photos and create graphics.

OpenOffice is a complete office suite that is compatible with MS Office. It has word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and drawing tools.

AbiWord is a powerful yet simple to use word processor. It is easy enough for use by young students yet still powerful enough for older students and staff.

We know that schools work hard to meet student needs with limited funds. We think free software can help. We are a volunteer group and we have nothing to sell. We'd like to meet with you or a staff person interested in using technology with learning and give you installation CD-Roms with these software packages. We will give you versions for Windows, Macintosh and Linux computers.

We would also be interested in hearing about the technology needs of your school and how our volunteers may be able to help. I will call you to schedule a time to come by the school with the software. Please consider which of your staff may be interested in these programs.

Sincerely,

Name
